Whether it’s triple-cooked chips, fried fish, crispy chicken or cinnamon-dusted churros, nothing does it better than a good deep fat fryer. As well as providing the irresistible crisping that comes from sizzling submersion, the best small deep fat fryers beat a pan full of oil every time. Not only can you safely set and regulate the temperature rather than guess and end up with frazzled food, but you can bypass most of the spitting and splashing that comes from deep-frying on the hob. You also won’t have the worry of a chip pan fire to deal with.
The Best Small Deep Fat Fryer UK 2021
If you’ve never bought one before, then a quick search online is enough to overwhelm anyone. That’s why we’ve done the hard work for you. We’ve browsed through the best small deep fat fryer reviews and tested the most-loved models to bring you this list of competitors to choose from.
1. The Swan SD6040N
If you’re looking for a large deep fat fryer to keep your entire family happy, then this could be the ultimate option for you. The Swan SD6040N prides itself on delivering a no-fuss solution for large capacity and excellent food.
You can cook up to 1kg of food at a time, and enjoy everything from crispy fish to chicken, chips, and more. The cool-touch handle helps to keep you safe while you fry, and like many of the deep fat fryers on the market, there’s a viewing window too. Despite its large capacity, this fryer is also quite compact, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a space for you in your kitchen. In case of electrical problems or overheating, this fryer is equipped with a safety cut-out and overheat protection, meaning that the machine will be shut off. Unfortunately, it is a little too small for some families, and the handle frequently comes out of the holes on the basket, which can be dangerous.
2. Progress EK2969P Compact Deep Fat Fryer
This dinky deep fat fryer had the smallest capacity of all the models we tried out. One for single chip lovers, this small plastic-cased model could also be used to cook in batches, of course, and the upside of that is that it takes up hardly any space on the counter. We managed to fry up a single chicken leg portion – two would have been a squeeze – and, afterwards, a round of chips for one (with a few extras for a friend to pinch from the plate). If you only indulge in the occasional deep-fried delights there is a useful filter to keep fat-frying smells down in the kitchen, but it won’t cope with more than one hungry mouth to feed.
3. Swan 2.5l Stainless Deep Fat Fryer
Large appliances can be worktop hogs, so if space is limited, this compact 1800W model could be your ideal route to deep-fried deliciousness. It’s small but perfectly formed, with a thermostat dial that ranges from 0˚C to 190˚C (plus lower temperatures) and a detachable basket handle that makes storage simple. Cleaning can be more of an issue – the 1.5l pan is fixed, although it does have a non-stick coating to make life easier. The hinged lid is also not removable, but the frying basket can be popped in the dishwasher for a thorough clean.
In testing, it heated up to its maximum 190°C in just under eight minutes and was easy to open and close thanks to a small lip on the edge of the lid. Decanting the used oil was a bit messy, but otherwise, this is an easy-to-manage, trouble-free fryer.
4. Breville Stainless Steel Pro Fryer
For those evenings where you fancy treating yourself to something naughty, the Breville 3 L Pro Fryer holds just enough for a two-person portion.
It’s sleek and compact, as well as incredible easy to use. It heats up quickly and you have an indicator light to let you know when the temperature is ready for frying so you can expect to get professional results each time.
Easy to clean
When you’re finished, the machine is easy to clean thanks to the bowl being dishwasher safe. In our opinion, this is the best deep fat fryer for small families.
5. Russell Hobbs 24580 Digital Deep Fryer
The Russell Hobbs 24580 is a powerhouse of a deep-fat fryer, capable of cooking family-sized portions at temperatures from 130C-190C.
It’s very easy to set up, coming up to temperature quickly. With powerful heating comes the potential for delicious deep-fried food, and the 24580 certainly seems capable of that.
This feels like a safe fryer to use. The sides of the appliance don’t get especially hot during use.
6. Tefal Oleoclean Pro FR804040 Semi-Professional
Deep fat fryers produce the best chips of all but they’re a right pain in the bottom to clean. The problem is that every time you fry something, it leaves behind a load of burnt crumbs that sit there waiting to be added to the next fry-up. The situation is even worse when you fry chips one day and breadcrumbed Chinese butterfly prawns the next. You not only end up with a tankful of crumby oil with a hint of fish that you feel the urge to take a fishing net to, but those crumbs also darken the oil and drastically shorten its lifespan.
This large 3.5-litre Tefal model features a unique cleaning system that rids the used oil of crumbs and other post-fry detritus after every meal. It’s a bloody ingenious and really simple twin-reservoir filter system that works brilliantly well.
When you’ve finished frying, simply flick the dial below the main oil container to the filter icon and, when the oil’s cooled down, it will automatically filter into a sealed plastic tank below, where it’ll sit safe and sound until your next fry session (Tefal recommends changing the oil every 10 to 12 uses).
7. Domo DO465FR Stainless Steel Deep Fryer
A simple fryer for the whole family
This is a fryer which you would want when capacity is king. 4L is perfect for cooking for 6-10 people (unless uncle Steve is feeling particularly hungry today) and the no-nonsense design has everything you need, including a thermostat, timer and windowed lid. Unlike some models, the odour filter is removable, a plus for those who don’t trust permanent filters.
3000W – The huge amount of power allows the oil to heat up in no time so you no longer have to wait around to feed your family.
Removable tank – The tank is enamel, ensuring nothing sticks, and removable so washing up doesn’t require you to move the entire unit.
Removable lid – The lid is removable and windowed for your convenience. A built-in odour filter traps bad smells and can be replaced when worn.
8. Tefal FF220040 Mini Deep Fryer
If you want something small both in size and capacity, this mini fryer is ideal for getting the job done without being too cumbersome.
Say you just want something which can fry desserts or the occasional snack as opposed to a whole few portions of chips or loads of chicken, it is the perfect size without being too excessive. You still get a load of the usual specifications, such as a viewing window and adjustable thermostat, too.
The carrying handle helps when moving the fryer around your kitchen, whether you want to pop it back into storage or like to move it from one bench to another to keep it on display. It looks sleek and modern and is no fuss to clean either.
9. KitchenCraft KCCHIPLRG
If you are a french-fry God or a chunky-crisp chip Guru then you should recognize this and find this very appealing. It as simple, but as reliable, as they come – just heat up the stove and warm the oil and you are on your way to fried potato heaven. This chip pan has had some tweaks to the traditional design you might remember, as KitchenCraft have used heat-resistant handles on the sides and including the grab-knob on the lid so it is very portable and secure while also using stainless-steel for the entire pan (including the lid). The lid is an ideal bit of kit to have as it prevents splatter, and spitting, when the chips are submerged – less clean up at the end!

What small deep-fat fryer features do we need?
If you’ve decided a deep-fat fryer is what you need, read on for our guide to the different features you’re likely to find and what to look out for.
This is the removable metal-wire basket where you put the food you want to fry. It has a hook which fits onto the bowl to keep the basket out of the oil while it drains off the fried food. The best fryers hold the basket away from the oil so that it can drain and no oil soaks into the food.
Major fryer brands, such as Breville, DeLonghi, and Russell Hobbs have a range of sizes available, so make sure you pick the right size machine for your needs. A capacity of 1 kg is more than enough for four portions of chips. You can also buy deep-fat fryers with two baskets for side-by-side cooking. Handy if you want to fry sweet and savoury treats at once, without any transfer of flavours.
Look for a deep-fat fryer with insulated walls to protect you – and any little ones – from the heat generated by cooking. Viewing window
A viewing window allows you to keep an eye on your chips as they cook, so you can stop and take them out once they’re done to your liking.
Some deep-fat fryers come with lids that lock, which prevents hot oil from splashing out while cooking and reducing the risks of spills if a fryer is knocked. Detachable lid
This makes cleaning off sticky oil residue and removing the filter much easier.
Removable or foldable basket handle
Some fryers come with basket handles which can either be removed or folded away, meaning that they take up less space in your cupboard when being stored. On some, this mechanism also doubles as a rise-and-fall feature, allowing you to close the lid before lowering the basket of food into the oil.
