8.Philips Avent Natural Feeding Bottle
If you’re new to the wide world of baby bottles, Philips Avent’s Natural plastic baby bottle is one to put on your shortlist. A popular choice with many parents, it’s a straightforward polypropylene bottle with only four pieces, including a wide nipple that’s meant to feel like the breast (although it’s not quite as wide as that of some other bottles). Its twin-valve venting system, meant to reduce gassiness from air swallowed during feedings, is built right into the nipple.
The Philips Avent Natural’s wider nipple can be helpful in avoiding drama when switching between boob and bottle, and our hands-on testers confirmed they had no trouble in this area. “Comfort petals” on the nipple increase softness and flexibility, according to the manufacturer, but not so much that the nipple collapses while baby is feeding. Our parent testers all said the nipple held up to their baby’s strongest sucking.
9.Philips Avent Microwave Steam Steriliser
The Philips Avent Microwave Steam Steriliser is designed to be lightweight and compact making sterilising baby bottles easier anywhere, anytime. Suitable for standard and wide neck bottles and can be also used to sterilise breast pumps, soothers, cutlery and other products. 10.Dr Brown’s Electric Steriliser and Dryer for Baby Bottles
But let’s get this out of the way at the start: like all steam appliances, including irons and kettles, electric sterilisers are prone to limescale build-up and can potentially break down. So why an electric steriliser, and why this one? Well, the trade-off for a monthly descaling is efficiency and cost-effectiveness. No chemicals, no remembering to buy sterilising tablets, no squeezing containers into your microwave. The Dr Brown’s comes entirely pre-assembled, which means it can be plugged in and is immediately ready for use. It can then be repeatedly reused, with only the aforementioned descaling to maintain it. The instruction manual, which is thorough and clear, includes a recipe for a natural descaling solution; the manufacturers recommend that this be done once every four weeks, although our tester descaled less often with no ill effects. (For additional peace of mind, the Dr Brown’s comes with a one-year warranty.)
How to choose the right steriliser for you
What to consider when looking for the steriliser that fits your needs…
Where will you use it? – Will you be at home with mains electricity all the time? Some sterilisers can also be used with a microwave – do you have one and how big is it?
Space – Is there room for a larger unit that can sterilise several bottles (standard and/or wide-necked) at once, or is a more compact device that takes up less space going to work better for you? Do you plan to use it past the bottle-feeding stage for feeding bowls and training cups when weaning?
Convenience – Do you want a cycle that completes quickly, or one that you can run overnight?
Accessories – Do you want bundle that also comes with bottles? Some sterilisers on our list with a drying function also come with a HEPA filter (air purifier filter) which will need changing – are there extra filters included in the price?
Technology is so good these days that cleanliness is not a factor you need to consider when choosing a steriliser. They all do a great job. Instead, look at what you will be sterilising and how much space you have. We adored the Phillips Avent 4 in 1 because it is small but spacious, quick and stylish and above all great value. Smaller and portable offerings like the Milton solo bottle steriliser are a great idea when away from home.
